I don’t know anything about fragrances; the notes mean nothing to me and I don’t know what makes a “good” fragrance. The first (and only) step I took to rectify this was getting several samples of Le Labo. I know that some of their scents (Santal 33) have taken the world by storm… and sometimes things are popular for a reason, right?
I went to the store in SoHo, sniffed every scent, and then wound up with five or so different samples. I avoided Santal 33 because that just seems gauche given that it’s ~ out of trend ~ now (even though I think it smells good lol).
I was exasperated when I discovered my favorite out of the samples was Thé Matcha 26. I love green tea and I think it has become part of my personal brand to others, so it feels like a cosmic joke that the green tea themed fragrance is my favorite. Sometimes you just can’t escape who you are.
The scent is clean and makes me think about the idealized version of myself that will never exist, but it’s a good reminder to strive for that vision no matter what.
